Melati & Isabel Wijsen in Bali – The Plastic Revolution. Bye Bye Plasticbags – Youth Driven Change – Bye Bye is a social initiative driven by children, driven by the youth to get the people of Bali to say no to plastic bags.
18-year old activist, Melati Wijsen is half Indonesian and half Dutch but born and raised on the island of Bali. She is currently a High School student at Green School and a member of the World’s Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council. She is passionate about activism, the environment, humanity, youth empowerment and women’s rights.
16-year old activist, Isabel Wijsen is half Indonesian and half Dutch but born and raised on the island of Bali. She is currently a High School student at Green School. Her heart lies in dance and performance. Isabel is a strong believer in speaking up for what is right.
Bye Bye Plastic Bags (BBPB)
An NGO driven by youth to get the people of Bali to say no to plastic bags. The campaign was launched in 2013 by founders and sisters, Melati (18) and Isabel (16) Wijsen. Since then, BBPB in Bali, has grown to include a volunteer team of 25 students from local and international schools around the island. The team has spent the last 6 years raising awareness about the waste problem in Bali through delivering school presentations and workshops, organizing beach clean-ups, providing 16,000+ alternative bags, working on creating a plastic bag free pilot village, lobbying with local and national governments, and speaking at a variety of local and global events.
The BBPB Team has spoken to 16,000 students across 12 countries in 8 different languages. They have become a well-known international movement of inspiration and youth empowerment > Selected by FORBES as part of the top 10 most inspiring women in Indonesia. In 2016, BBPB went global and established 9 new BBPB groups in international cities with 10+ cities planning to establish their own chapter within the next year.

Feb 2017: Organized Bali’s Biggest Beach Clean Up, 12,000 pax, collected 40+ tons of trash, across 55 locations.
Dec 2016: Received the ‘2016 Global Youth of the Year’ Award in Taiwan.
May 2016: Celebrated 1-million views of Melati and Isabel’s talk at TEDGlobal London, delivered 8 months prior.
June 2015: Received confirmation from the Governor of Bali, that Bali will become plastic bag free by 2018.
May 2015: Launched One Island One Voice campaign: a collective movement of like-minded activists, standing and acting for a more sustainable Bali.
Nov 2014: Went on hunger strike to catch the attention of the Governor of Bali. Successfully met with Gov by day 2 to talk about stopping plastic bags.
