Canwen Xu is a passionate advocate of Asian-American issues. Born in Nanjing, China, she moved to the United States when she was just two years old. Since then, she has lived in some of the least diverse states in the country, including North Dakota, South Dakota and Idaho. Her experience growing up in these environments have helped her understand the unique role that Asian-Americans play in 21st century race relations.
Canwen Xu’s speaking topic is: “Intercultural Leadership: Asian-American issues and education”
In 2016 she gave a talk titled “I Am Not Your Asian Stereotype” at the TEDxBoise conference. The speech went viral on Youtube and Chinese social media, and at one point was trending on the popular Chinese social media site Weibo. The talk has also been featured in the China Daily, Yahoo News China, and many other influential Chinese news sites.
In December 2017, Canwen spoke at Boston University’s Breaking Boundaries event, where she was featured alongside Youtube comedian Kevjumba (Kevin Wu), pilates entrepreneur Blogilates (Cassey Ho), and Crazy Rich Asians actress Awkwafina (Nora Lum).
Canwen is currently a student at Columbia University in the City of New York studying political science and computer science. She is pursuing a career in finance and hopes to someday be an advocate for Asian-Americans in the corporate world. When she’s not studying for her next test or speaking on social issues, she enjoys riding her bike on the Boise greenbelt, exploring coffee shops around New York City, and spending time with her friends and family.
